I had a 10-year-old shortstop in our program three years ago. Talented kid — great hands, quick first step, hit the ball hard for his age. His parents had already decided he was a baseball player. Year-round travel ball starting at 8U, no other sports, private lessons twice a week since he was six. By the time he hit 13, he was burned out. He quit mid-season. Not because he wasn’t good — he was — but because he’d never been allowed to just be an athlete first.
Long-term athlete development (LTAD) is a training framework that matches the type of sport exposure and physical training a child receives to their stage of physical and psychological growth — not their chronological age alone. The goal is to build complete athletes who stay in sport longer, develop higher skill ceilings, and are far less prone to overuse injuries and burnout. For youth coaches, understanding even the basics of LTAD changes how you structure practice, how you talk to parents, and how you think about winning at 9U.
The Three LTAD Stages Youth Coaches Actually See
The formal LTAD model has up to seven stages, but working with athletes from 7U through high school, you’ll spend nearly all your time in three of them.
FUNdamentals (roughly ages 6–9)
This is the stage where the most damage happens — not from too little sport, but from too much of the wrong sport. Kids in this window are building foundational movement: running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing, changing direction. The goal is physical literacy, not sport-specific skill. An 8-year-old does not need a two-seam fastball. They need to be able to stop on a dime, absorb a landing, and throw with their whole body.
In our program, we deliberately blur sport lines during this window. At baseball practice, our 7U kids do soccer-style kicking warm-ups, basketball dribbling relays, and tag games that build lateral quickness. The kids think it’s just fun. We know it’s building the physical vocabulary they’ll spend the next decade drawing from.
Learn to Train (roughly ages 9–12)
This is the golden window. Children in this stage respond to skill instruction better than at any other point in their athletic lives. The nervous system is primed, coordination is rapidly maturing, and kids can follow multi-step coaching cues in ways they simply couldn’t at 7. This is when we teach throwing mechanics, hitting posture, sprint technique, and first-step quickness — because the learning sticks.
It’s also when early-specialization pressure peaks, because kids start to look noticeably good at their primary sport. Parents see a talented 10-year-old shortstop and think: lock it in. What the research — and our combined coaching experience — tells us is that the athletes who thrive at 16 are almost always the ones who played two or three sports through this window.
Train to Train (roughly ages 12–16)
By this stage, sport-specific training becomes increasingly appropriate — but the athletic base you built in the two earlier stages is what determines the ceiling. Athletes who arrive here having played multiple sports tend to be more coachable, more adaptable, and more injury-resistant. The single-sport-since-age-7 athlete often hits a wall: good mechanics in one plane of movement, underdeveloped in every other.
This is also the stage where strength training becomes genuinely valuable. A 13- or 14-year-old who has done age-appropriate resistance work — bodyweight progressions, loaded carries, basic lifts — is building force-production capacity that directly translates into speed, power, and injury prevention. The Early Specialization Trap — What We See on the Field
I want to be specific here because the research and the field experience align almost perfectly.
Early specializers — athletes who commit to one sport before age 12 and train it year-round — show up with three predictable patterns by the time they reach high school:
Overuse injuries. Same movement patterns, same tissues, same stress, week after week, year after year. Growth plates are not built for that volume. We’ve had athletes arrive at 14 and 15 with UCL stress, chronic hip flexor issues, and stress fractures that trace directly to single-sport early training.
Movement gaps. A kid who only played baseball from age 6 often has limited lateral movement, poor deceleration mechanics, and underdeveloped hip stability. They can read a curveball, but they can’t cut hard to their right — and that lateral-force absorption matters in baseball too, even if they never kick a ball.
Burnout. The one that stings the most. We’ve lost talented athletes not to injury but to exhaustion — from a sport they used to love. Passion has a shelf life if it’s the only thing on the menu.
The multi-sport path is not slower. It is safer, and it produces higher ceilings.
Strength Is the Foundation — Not a Finishing Touch
One pattern we’ve noticed consistently — confirmed by what sports performance researchers and coaches have been showing this past season — is that slow, uncoordinated young athletes are almost never slow because of bad mechanics. They’re slow because they haven’t built enough strength to produce force into the ground.
Most youth coaches (we did this too, early on) respond to a slow 10-year-old with agility ladder drills and cone patterns. It looks like a mechanics problem. But if the athlete can’t produce enough force on each ground contact, no amount of footwork coaching creates speed. The three-phase approach that actually works:
- Build a foundation of relative strength — bodyweight squats, hinge patterns, push-pull, loaded carries at age-appropriate levels
- Develop elastic, reactive movement through basic plyometric progressions
- Only then layer in true max-intent sprinting and sport-specific agility work
Skip step one and you’re polishing a weak engine.
The athletes who respond fastest to speed and agility training are almost always the ones with the best strength base going in — not the ones who have done the most ladder drills.
A LTAD-Aligned Practice Block (Ages 8–13)
This 25-minute block works for any sport. It’s what an LTAD-aligned warm-up and athletic development window actually looks like in practice — as opposed to what it looks like in a framework document.
Once the foundational movement quality is solid, pair this block with progressive agility ladder drills for kids to start building change-of-direction capacity on top of the strength base.

Talking to Parents About LTAD
The hardest part of implementing LTAD principles is not the practice design — it’s the parent conversation. Here’s how we frame it, and it works:
“Your son or daughter is not behind. They are building the athletic foundation that will carry them through high school and beyond. Athletes who specialize early often plateau before 16. The ones who stay multi-sport and train smart are still improving at 18 and 19.”
We put a version of this in the welcome note at the start of every season. Parents who understand the why stop fighting the process — and some of them become the most vocal advocates for it once they see it pay off.
The Multi-Sport Commitment
Our coaching staff encourages every athlete under 14 to play at least two sports. We actively tell baseball families in October: please have your kid play soccer, basketball, flag football — anything that moves them in different planes, uses different muscles, and puts them in different competitive environments.
This is not anti-baseball. It is pro-athlete. And the research reinforces it: young female athletes who play multiple sports show measurably better neuromuscular control and significantly lower ACL injury rates — because their nervous systems have been trained to solve a wider variety of movement problems. That neurological richness pays direct dividends in their primary sport.
What This Looks Like in Your Program
You do not need a sports science degree to implement LTAD principles. Here is the practical version:
- Under 10: prioritize movement variety, make it genuinely fun, resist the urge to specialize
- Ages 10–12: teach skills deliberately, but keep multiple sports on the schedule
- Ages 12–16: build strength intentionally, let sport-specific training expand gradually
- At every age: physical literacy first, sport skills second
The athletes who come back years later and thank their coaches are rarely the ones who peaked at 12U. They are the ones who were still getting better at 17 — because someone built them right from the start.
